This is a picture I used to illustrate several innovations the potters of Islam used to compete with Chinese porcelain. Lusterware which mimics gold through a reduction firing process. This plate from the Ashmolean, Iraq 10th Century, shows how the potters mimic the hammer marks from metal works. The plate also dispels the myth that Islam forbids imagery of people and animals. This plate actually shows the image of the Buddha! Which I think is fantastic.
