I generally have a plan when I’m sitting down to throw my pottery.  If I don’t, I spend too much time sitting there wondering what I’m going to do for the day.  I create a lot of museum replicas which require some thought and research. So I generally spend a week or so gathering pictures and doing research. I think about how to construct each piece and write notes on the pictures. I gather my materials, notes and when the weather is right (because Kentucky), I start to create.

I generally create series of objects. For example, I recently created a series of Pharmacy jars (Albarello) from different areas and time periods to show there differences and similarities. When I create in series it helps me learn faster about which throwing and glazing techniques are best and which are not. What went right and what went horribly wrong. I try to document my journey through the series so others can learn from my mistakes and successes. If you want to read the paper on my latest pharmacy jar project follow this link.
