Illuminating the world
The Creative Process
My Illuminations
Illuminated manuscripts were created by scribes who wrote the text and illuminators who painted the decorations. Monasteries in western Europe were often centers of manuscript production. In Islamic countries, it seems the caliphate oversaw the creation of Islamic manuscripts which cover a wide range of topics including the Quran and its sciences, hadith, theology, law (fiqh), Sufism, philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, rhetoric, grammar, poetry, history, geography, and medicine.
The illuminations I create are a blend of art and text. I try to personalize each one to reflect the individuals persona and occasion.
Each page I create can take a week to a month to complete from the initial design concept. Some illuminations are made with period inks, colorants and methods. Some are completed with modern ink and paints. Scrolls can be made on parchment, pseudo parchment and/or in most cases paper.

Examples
I take commissions or requests occasionally. Often times, I donate my skills and time to the SCA Middle Kingdom since all scrolls are assigned and made at the time of award. This is a huge undertaking for the scribes in the area and I help when I can.
